Understanding the Reciprocal Apparatus

Have you ever noticed that when a horse bends its hock, the stifle bends at exactly the same time?

This isn't a coincidence. It is the result of one of the most ingenious pieces of anatomy in the horse's body, known as the Reciprocal Apparatus.

What Is the Reciprocal Apparatus?

The Reciprocal Apparatus is a specialised mechanical system found in the horse's hindlimb. It links the movement of the stifle and hock so that both joints flex and extend together.

This means the horse cannot normally flex one of these joints without the other moving at the same time.

How Does It Work?

The system relies primarily on two important structures:

• The Peroneus Tertius.
• The Superficial Digital Flexor muscle and tendon.

Working together, these structures ensure that movement of the stifle is automatically transferred to the hock, creating smooth, efficient movement throughout the hindlimb.

Why Is It Important?

The Reciprocal Apparatus improves efficiency during walking, trotting, cantering and galloping. Rather than individual muscles controlling each joint separately, the linked system allows the hindlimb to function as a coordinated unit.

It also plays an important role in the Stay Apparatus, helping the horse conserve energy while resting.

What Happens If It Is Damaged?

Injury to the Reciprocal Apparatus is uncommon but can occur following trauma.

If the Peroneus Tertius ruptures, the normal relationship between the stifle and hock is lost. A horse may then be able to extend the hock while the stifle remains flexed, something that is not possible in a normal limb.

This abnormal movement is an important clinical finding during veterinary examination.

Understanding the Reciprocal Apparatus helps explain why injuries affecting one part of the hindlimb often influence movement elsewhere.

It also helps owners appreciate why veterinarians examine the entire hindlimb rather than focusing solely on the area that appears swollen or painful.

Relationship with the Stay Apparatus

The Reciprocal Apparatus works closely with the Stay Apparatus discussed in HKH017.

When the patella locks the stifle during rest, the Reciprocal Apparatus helps stabilise the hock, allowing the horse to remain standing comfortably with minimal muscular effort.
